Davis, Charles August (1795 - 1867).

A closely written three page autographed letter signed, from Charles Augustus Davis to William L. Marcy, then Secretary of War. March 24, 1848. Marked "Private Chat," this letter's focus is to report the emergence of the United States as a great world power.

"The news of our peace with Mexico will have reached Europe in good time and it is not improbable that a material amount of capital invested there will slip out there and slip in here - for I consider our very worst securities as quite equal to their best - for just so sure as they attempt republics then there will soon be found any quantity of 'old Continental' to light pipes and cigars with."
Charles Augustus Davis was for many years in the international iron trade. Very well versed in commercial and financial affairs he wrote brilliantly on these subjects. He is best known for the "Peter Scriber Letters" and "Major Jack Downing's Letters." His home in New York was the meeting place of the poet Halleck and many of the Knickerbockers writers.
