Originally published in 1714. Mrs. Centlivre was an "English actress and dramatist, a masculine-looking woman who delighted to play men's parts. After two unhappy marriages she went to Windsor to play Alexander the Great and there met and married Joseph Centlivre, cook to Queen Anne. She was more successful as a writer than an actress, and among her many comedies of intrigue, in which she rivaled the verve and ingenuity of Aphra Behn, the best are 'The Busie Bod' and 'A Bold Stroke for a Wife'." - OXFORD COMPANION TO THEATRE. CBEL II p.432.
