This celebratory volume announces the completion of eight years of construction (1928-1936). Shown here are the new bridges, the excavation and paving, the blasting through mountainous terrain, and the opening of a passage for tourism from the north. "The highway functioned metaphorically as a bridge between previously fractured nations and created a sense of Panamericanism and 'good neighborliness,' two ideas ingrained in promotional campaigns for tourism after 1936. More literally, it became Mexico's principal artery to which future roads within Mexico would connect." - Berger. THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEXICO'S TOURISM INDUSTRY.
