First edition. "In the 1840's, and even later, the Sanders' School Readers were the most popular readers in the East... In 1861 Sanders began publishing the Union Readers. In the preface of Number One he stated: 'The increasing demand for greater variety of exercises in reading, both in style and matter, has led to the preparation of Sanders' Union Series. Every lesson in Number One was illustrated by a picture.'
Sanders was a prolific and successful textbook writer. In addition to the two series of readers, he was also the author of popular spelling books. It has been estimated that about 13,000,000 of his books were sold." - Nietz. OLD TEXTBOOKS.
