An autographed letter signed by the congressman from Massachusetts, to Thomas Payson. Salem, May 2, 1808. (Item ID: 3572)

"The committee took into consideration last evening various applications which have been made to them relative to the female school about to be established in this town - several applied who produced the best testimonials of their character and qualifications, but the choice after taking all circumstances into consideration lay between Mr. Coles Pricester (?) of the Marblehead Academy and yourself." The letter goes on to explain why Mr. Payson did not get the position.
