Epinal, France: Pellerin & Cie, c. 1890. An uncut hand colored sheet for articulated paper dolls. The sheet, which measures 11 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches, contains two dolls - Pierrot and Colombine. (Item ID: 2542)

The Pellerin Family of Epinal, France began making popular prints in the mid eighteenth century and the family business continues to this day. By the later half of the nineteenth century, a great deal of the business was directed toward the printing of inexpensive paper toys for children including toy theatres, jumping jacks, and construction models of many kinds. Because of the extreme fragility of these paper toys, few of them have survived. When they have, it is usually in this uncut state. The "pantin" or jumping jack was one of the most successful of the Epinal toys.
