First edition. "As American Minister to Mexico from 1842 - 1844, Thompson concluded a successful mission. He reached an agreement with the Mexicans which freed several groups of Texans who had undertaken military expeditions against Mexico; he persuaded the Mexican government to continue to allow American immigrants into California; he made some progress towards a peaceful purchase of California; and he reached several agreements with the Mexicans over American claims. Thompson writes some about these activities, but the book is mostly concerned with Mexico. Although he returned to the United States an ardent friend of Mexico, he was not optimistic about her immediate future. He believed the country to be so weak that she had nothing to fear from foreign invasion." - Cole. AMERICAN TRAVELERS TO MEXICO. # 431.
