THE NEW YORK HERALD, July 30, 1863. 8 pages. With a large woodcut map of Mexico on the first leaf. Folio, extracted from a large volume; minor chipping and marginal stains. (Item ID: 1974)

The glaring headline reads "THE NEW EMPIRE OF MEXICO". "Once again, after an interval of forty years, we have an imperial neighbor on our Western frontier..." In a five column analysis the author discusses the conditions in Mexico on the establishment of the French takeover. Though no "Emperor" has been named, the author shows concern for this European encroachment so close to the United States.

The large woodcut map is of interest for showing the few meager roads within Mexico and the four main shipping routes out of New Orleans that connect the country to its northern neighbor.

Much of the rest of this issue is taken up with news of the United States Civil War.
