First English edition, originally published in Paris the previous year. Michel Chevalier (1806 - 1879) was a noted French economist, professor and under Napoleon III, a councilor of state and senator. He wrote extensively on the United States, where he spent two years during the 1830's, and Mexico, then highly influenced by the French.
