El Paso: Texas Western Press, 1952. pages. Illustrated from drawings by Jose Cisneros. Tall thin quarto (12 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches). Cloth backed boards with pictorial dust jacket; very light wear. Item #1252
One of 525 copies, signed by the designer and printer Carl Hertzog. The first publication of the Texas Western Press at what is now the University of Texas at El Paso. A handsome depiction, through twelve drawings of colonial life in northern New Spain. An interesting aside is that the design for the cover paper texture was obtained by making prints from an adobe brick. "When a piece of the brick was broken off, revealing an unmistakable dollop of dried horse manure, Hertzog speculated that it was the first time this element had been discovered on the 'outside' of a book." - Lowman. PRINTER AT THE PASS. #78.
