In 1890 there were 10,561 persons institutionalized in Indiana; 2,484 were in prisons; 2,223 were in insane asylums; 1,621 were dependent adults and 2,648 were dependent children. There is an interesting detailed report of the Secretary's visit to each of the "Poor Asylums" of Indiana.
