circa 1930.

A group of 24 silver gelatin prints, each in an embossed brown mat, signed and captioned in ink on the mat. The images measure 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches in an 8 x 10 inch mat; light wrinkling to some mats.

The 24 photographs show interior and exterior details of architectural structures in Puebla, Mexico. Included are: a birds-eye-view of Puebla; the Cathedral; the famed Santa Rosa kitchen; various majolica tiled buildings; the Capilla Real, built in 1549 and modeled on the great Mosque in Cordova, Spain; the large ex-convento San Francisco, the Federal Palace, and others.
Enrique A. Cervantes (1898-1953) was an engineer, photographer and historic preservationist. He spent his life on researching, measuring, drawing and photographing the architectural and decorative arts of colonial Mexico. From 1928 to 1942 he produced ten limited edition portfolios of original photographs depicting the colonial heritage of various Mexican cities.
Individually issued photographs by Cervantes are more uncommon than his published portfolios. A few of the above images are reproduced in his portfolio "Puebla de los Angeles en el Ano de Mil Novecientos Trienta y Tres" though most of the above are other buildings or variants of the published images.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE LIGHT-HOUSE BOARD OF THE UNITED STATES TO THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY FOR THE PHYSICAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1872.
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1872.

Octavo, 9 ¼ x 5 ¾ inches ( 235 x 146 mm.). Embossed red cloth with gilt title; slight damp staining to the bottom of the plates.

The United States Light-House Board, originally known as the United States Light House Establishment, was created in 1789 to manage the twelve colonial lighthouses along the eastern seaboard. By 1851, over 300 lighthouses had been erected in the United States. Responding to complaints about the management of their affairs, Congress authorized a board of specialists to study the matter. The board found that lighthouses built during the mid nineteenth century suffered from inadequate construction and design and created the new United States Light-House Board. The Naval and Army engineers on the Light-House Board brought great changes to lighthouse construction and organization. The installation of new Fresnel lenses, capable of gathering and focusing a central light into a beam visible from far distances, as well as new types of fog signals and buoys were among the innovations they instituted. It was not until 1886 that the Light House Board tested a new light source, electricity, to illuminate the torch of the Statue of Liberty, a key aid to navigation at the time.

Bunraku is a blending of storytelling and puppetry - "possibly the most developed form of puppetry in the world," - www.japan-zone.com. First developed in Osaka in 1684, the art flowered during the eighteenth century and then lost favor until recent times. The puppets are large, usually about half life-size and the main characters are operated by three puppeteers. The main puppeteer, who manipulates the head, is seen on stage, generally dressed in bright robes, while his assistants wear black.

Photographs of the exposition's opening ceremonies are followed by depictions in profile of prize winning horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, goats, rabbits, and fowl. One interesting image shows a photographer with his set-up photographing one of these prize winning specimens. Equestrian displays and other exhibitions as well as the interiors and exteriors of the buildings are pictured in many of the photographs. There are six overviews of the fair showing the large crowds and extensive grounds.
Though taken just a few years after Germany's defeat in a world war, the crowds and pride in the livestock shown in these photographs display an optimism not often seen in 1920's Germany. Founded in 1885, the Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft is still active today, with over 17,000 members worldwide.
