Bunraku is a blending of storytelling and puppetry - "possibly the most developed form of puppetry in the world," - www.japan-zone.com. First developed in Osaka in 1684, the art flowered during the eighteenth century and then lost favor until recent times. The puppets are large, usually about half life-size and the main characters are operated by three puppeteers. The main puppeteer, who manipulates the head, is seen on stage, generally dressed in bright robes, while his assistants wear black.

Photographs of the exposition's opening ceremonies are followed by depictions in profile of prize winning horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, goats, rabbits, and fowl. One interesting image shows a photographer with his set-up photographing one of these prize winning specimens. Equestrian displays and other exhibitions as well as the interiors and exteriors of the buildings are pictured in many of the photographs. There are six overviews of the fair showing the large crowds and extensive grounds.
Though taken just a few years after Germany's defeat in a world war, the crowds and pride in the livestock shown in these photographs display an optimism not often seen in 1920's Germany. Founded in 1885, the Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft is still active today, with over 17,000 members worldwide.

104 pages. With folding map (with tape repairs), wood engraved views and six anonymous mounted albumen photographs, 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (140 x 89 mm.), each having arched tops. Large octavo, 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches (241 x 159 mm.). Green cloth; wear to covers.

The fourth annual report on Philadelphia's grand Fairmount Park, the largest landscaped park in the United States. Four years after the publication of this report, this park was to be the home of our great Centennial Exhibition of 1876. The landscape photographs in this volume are in the tradition of east coast nature studies, closely resembling the style of the photographer John Moran. Public Works Department reports of this period from New York, Boston, and other cities also contained original mounted photographs, but by the 1880's the use of original photographs in these reports was discontinued.

Our research suggests that the first photographic class album was issued at Harvard University in 1852. Boston photographer John Adams Whipple made original daguerreotypes of the students and from these he produced copies with the crystalotype process and pasted the copy prints in albums. We have found no reference to a class album being issued with paper photographs taken from life prior to this 1855 Free Academy Souvenir.
An experiment in higher education for the masses and one of the first tuition-free, municipal colleges in the United States, the Free Academy of New York opened in 1849. Seventeen young men graduated at its first commencement exercises at Niblo's Garden in 1853. By 1870, a division for women, eventually named Hunter College, was added to educate teachers for the growing public school system.
This album includes sentiments (though no photographs) by the following notable professors; Horace Webster, Wolcott Gibbs, and Charles Edward Anthon. Also included are photographs and inscriptions from some notable students: Elihu Dwight Church. A partner in the company, founded by his father, that was to become the "Arm and Hammer Baking Soda" firm. He was a great book collector of Americana and his library, which included the manuscript of Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography, was purchased by Henry Huntington for $1,000,000; Everett P. Wheeler. Graduated the Free Academy in 1855. Wheeler became a prominent lawyer and civic reformer and was a founder of the New York Bar. In 1891 he assisted in the founding of the East Side House, a part of the New York settlement movement; Charles. B. Hayes. Enlisted in the Muscatine County Volunteers, Company C, on April 22, 1861. He became a Sergeant and in August of that year was wounded at the Battle at Wilson's Creek, Missouri; Henry A. Post. Colonel Post commanded the 2nd Regiment of Sharpshooters from 1861 to 1863.

A photograph of the original wooden structure that housed Krupp's first factory, surrounded by the huge development of factories, furnaces, and supplies that made up the Krupp Essen/Ruhr works, opens the portfolio. Eight images show the smelting, pouring, storing, and assembly of various large guns. There are monstrous hydraulic presses, vast chain hoists, and always hundreds of workers. A final photograph is an exterior view with numerous large cannons ready for shipment.
In 1811, Friedrich Krupp opened a factory in his hometown of Essen in the Ruhr river valley, providing high-quality cast steel for tools and dies. His son Alfred took over at Friedrich's death and in 1859 received an order from the Prussian government for the production of munitions to be used in the Franco-Prussian War. Leading up to World War I, Krupp made millions constructing the armor plating that protected German battleships and fabricating the huge cannons it is best known for. This French edition of the portfolio and text proudly presents Krupp's capacity to build the largest, strongest, and best cannons of their day. Published three years before the devastation of the First World War.
