Rebecca Sophie Clarke (1833 - 1906) wrote forty five books between 1860 and 1903, the most popular of which were the "Little Prudy" series. She was referred to by the contemporary press as the "Dickens of the nursery". Inspired by her nieces, she wrote of children who were often naughty and uninhibited, thus being one of the early children's fiction writers to break out of the mode of impossibly perfect children.
